At the foot of the Bernia mountains, the old Altea town is built
against the hill, proudly overlooking the houses, the
characterisic church with its blue and white tiled round
rooftop. A familiar orientation point in the landscape.
Walking through the steep tight paved streets and passing by the
blue and white walls you get the most surprising sneek peaks
into allees and onto the sea. The steep little roads eventually
lead to the church plaza of the Virgin del consuelo church where
during the summer months artists gather to show there work.
Right there near this plaza is a mirador....with a spectacular
view you do not want to miss.!
Down in the town there is a long promenade with cosy little bars
and terraces, and the shopping precinct Avenida Del Rey Jaime I.
Every afternoon in the marina freshly caught fish is sold.
In and around Altea there are plenty of traditional, local
festivities. One of the most impressive ones is the Moros y
Christianos in September with colourful parades through the
streets.
Altea has about 6 km of beaches...some rocky beaches...some
stones and gravel. The Playa de la Roda is near the old town
centre and the main beach, Playa de Cap blanch is at the south
side and continues all the way into Albir beach. The northern
beach Playa de Cap Negret is a gravel beach that runs into a
smal cave with black stones that is called Cala del Soio.
Lolla is an other well visited beach at the other side of the
small Island with the same name. The southern City boarder of
Altea goes all the way to Mascarat and the Sierra de Bernia,
where the Barreta-,the Slosida-, and the Galera-caves are
situated.
There are plenty of tips for Citytrips. Long ago the city
centre of Alteawas along the road to the Sierra de Bernia. This
is now called Altea la Vella or Altea La Vieja and liles about
3 km away from the actual Altea. The Sierra de Bernia with its
well known Font Del Garroferet and the old Fort are recomended.
The worthwhile Gualdelest (24km) is to be reached through the
typical mountain village of Callosa dEn Serra and is built
against the mountains leaning into the rocks and bordering with
a huge reservoir-lake.
