The inner sea known
as the Mar Menor is probably one of the most beautiful areas of the
Spanish Mediterranean. The clear, warm, slightly salted water and the
white beaches tempts you to spend your holiday there almost any time of
the year. Virtually in the centre of this exotic lagoon, opposite of the
well known resort of
La Manga, you will find Los Alcázares, once described by a famous writer
as ‘soft’ and ‘sweet’.
During the Muslim occupation the Arab Kings found Los Alcázares an ideal
location, they took great deal of pleasure in the area and particularly
enjoyed bathing in the warm salty water of the natural basin.
The word ‘Alcázar’ is derived from the ancient Arab word ‘Al-qasr’ which
means ‘fortress, obviously the Moors considered the area should be
retained and protected.
The people of Murcia have been visiting Los Alcázares for many years, to
enjoy the sea water, the beaches and it’s tasty Mediterranean kitchen.
This is illustrated by the numerous bathing houses that are found along
the Playa del Espejo. Los Alcázares is a modern and dynamic town where
you can find everything that today’s lifestyle demands as well as being
able to enjoy the leisure and health pursuits of the past such as
thermal baths and the healthy waters of the inner sea. The calm water of
the inner sea offers you an enormous variety of sporting activities such
as surfing, sailing, water-skiing, swimming, scuba-diving etc.………
Los Alcázares is easy to reach. In recent years access to the town has
been dramatically improved, by road and by air through the nearby
airport of San Javier. There is every reason to visit the area and enjoy
the wonderful climate, the classic bathing houses, the beaches and the
beautiful scenery and environment.
Health
The high concentration of salt, the influence of strong sunshine and the
elimination of the Mediterranean flows, have turned this lagoon into one
big open-air health resort. There are thermal baths and facilities
suitable for all ages and budgets. The waters of Mar Menor contain high
concentrations of Magnesium, Calcium, Sodium, Iodine and Fluorine.
Health resorts
Due to the availability of natural elements, such as the use of sediment
/ mud or curing silt, people with skin-disorders, problems like
rheumatism, muscle and joint problems, arthritis and gout are getting
some relief from their problems. There are health-resorts in Los
Alcázares, Lo Pagan, Santiago de la Ribera, Los Urrutias and La Manga.
The people of this area are a testament to the benefits of the healthy
climate. They enjoy beautiful weather, sunny days which usually end with
beautiful sunsets. They have a great quality of life enhanced by
numerous festivals, paella competitions, parades, firework displays,
dances, sporting competitions etc .There are many restaurants in the
area which offer a large range of gastronomic specialties as well as
varied and succulent local dishes.
Sports
The Mar Menor is ideal for water sports. There are numerous
sport-centres which have facilities to allow top-sportspersons the
opportunity to prepare for their tournaments and competitions, in a
fantastic environment.
Mar Menor is known as the Mecca of the Mediterranean for aquatic sports
. It offers countless possibilities for wind-surfers and every kind of
sailor. There is very little movement and hardly any waves. There are
several diving, sailing and canoe training schools where one can learn
the technique of the sports and lots of opportunity to practice newly
acquired skills. In addition there are facilities for the storage of
one’s equipment.
There is more to offer than aquatic sports. There are many different
sport centres where one can play tennis, football, basketball, handball,
…..etc. Golfers can use and enjoy the beautiful 45 hole golf course of
La Manga which is of championship standard and is considered one of the
best courses in Spain. Sports start early, the calm waters allow mothers
to feel comfortable about letting their children play on the beach and
in the water.
And for those who like a different kind of sport, there is the grand
Casino of La Manga.
Infrastructure
Mar Menor is only a few minutes away from the Airport in San Javier.
Look for information in our section on the right of this page. Since
2001 there is a good motorway connection between the rest of Europe and
Mar Menor, thanks to the new motorway Crevilliente-Cartagena.
Gastronomy
It is difficult to resist the fantastic Mediterranean kitchen with it’s
endless gastronomic varieties. Every day there is fresh fish and sea
fruits, caught in the Mar Menor lagoon. The restaurants serve
traditional and tasty ingredients in the typical Paella or in the
Caldero de Arroz. There is a great choice of grilled fish and meats.
This part of Spain is well known for it’s fruits and vegetables which
are extensively grown in the area around Murcia.
