Torrevieja has been
transformed from a small fishing town to a major metropolis during the
last 25-30 years.
The rapid growth of the area and a continuous programme of investment
has resulted in a very attractive city for the residents and an ever
increasing number of visitors.
The whole infrastructure of the city has been improved to provide lots
of amenities including parks, promenades, restaurants, shops etc.…
In 2000 the Local Authority changed the main sea-front promenade into a
pedestrian zone, where people can walk free from traffic and enjoy the
sea views or bath in the open-air sea water swimming pools that have
been constructed.
The pier has been completely renovated and improved. The pier is open to
the public and provides the perfect setting for a leisurely with
fantastic views of the sea, the beaches and the harbour in complete
safety.. Every evening, on the promenade, there
is a colourful market called “Los Hypies”, where many nationalities
(especially people from Africa) sell their products, such as cloths,
paintings, souvenirs, etc… There is an amusement park alongside the
promenade that is open throughout the year.
A new commercial centre has recently been completed which is called “El
Centro de Ocio” (2001) This is located close to the city’s largest
supermarket “Carrefour”. The centre has a multi screen cinema, ten pin
bowling, shops bars and restaurants etc…
Climate
People from all over Europe come to Torrevieja because of it’s mild
climate including the worst winter months.
Gastronomically you can you find everything. The Mediterranean kitchen
is one of the four best in the world, The extensive use of easily
digestible olive oil and the favourite dishes of fish, chicken, fruit
and vegetables which are readily available has helped to ensure that the
local population is one of healthiest in Europe.
Every morning and evening fresh fish caught locally or from the Mar
Menor is for sale near the harbour.
Salt-lakes
The salt-lakes (Salinas) have a major impact on the climate around
Torrevieja. The salt-lakes are used for the production of salt, which is
exported from Torrevieja harbour to countries all over the world.
The salt lakes of Torrevieja, Santa Pola, San Javier and La Manga
and the salt that they produce has made this area one of the most
important producers in the world. Many Northern European countries
depend on this salt supply to keep their roads etc… usable during the
harsh winter months.
The salt-lake of La Mata is a protected nature-area where Flamingo’s and
many other varieties of birds migrate during the winter months.
The Salt-lakes have a medicinal effect on people with health problems,
such as skin diseases, gout, rheumatism, arthritis, etc…
The area does not suffer the pollution from heavy industries. The
atmosphere is good with clean fresh air. Visitors quickly notice the
beneficial qualities of the area which encourages healthy appetites and
a good nights sleep.
Night-live
Torrevieja caters for the youngsters with Disco’s like “Pacha” and the
“Revival”, and if you go to the south, especially to “Lo Pagan” there
are a lot of disco’s near the beach. Young people from all over Spain
and many other countries meet, listen to music, and have a great time.
There is a casino complete with it’s original décor near the harbour,
and restaurants and bars of every description.
