Alicante, the capital of the province, is located on the south-west
coast of Spain. The city is built around a beautiful bay at foot of the
castle mountain with it’s castle, Santa Barbara. Alicante, was
originally called “Lucentum” by the Romans and “Lecant” or “AL Lucant”
by the Mores. It is now a prosperous modern city with lots of amenities,
hotels apartments and residential areas.
Alicante as a place to stay over the winter is the centre of the Costa
Blanca. The town hall invest the last few year a
lot of money in parks, streets, extended boulevards and shopping centre,
cinemas, etc... The city has a varied industry
(Chemistry, Aluminium), and an economic important harbour. Export of
wine, raisins, oranges, olive oil, liquorice, and “Espartogras” (Typical
Spanish shoes) contributes a mayor part of the income.
Sight seeing: the centre of the city is the “Plaza de Calvo Sotelo”,
from here down town over the Avenida Dr. Gadea and both sides with a lot
of palm-threes do you arrive in the harbour. From the harbour you have
nice view over the luxury boats, restaurants, bars and promenade.
The almost 600 m long Esplenada de España, grown with palm threes, with
bars, restaurants brings you to the light tower at the end of the pier
from where you have a nice view over beach and sea.
The Plaza Puerta del Mar what goes over at north east into the
“Esplanada de España”, is the “Paseo de Gómiz”, and goes from the beach
“Playa del Postiguet” to the suburb and further to the beach of San
Juan.
Via the Plaza Puerta del Mar do you go to the left over the what looks
like a park into the “Plaza de Teniente Luciañez” in the old part of the
city of Alicante and to the church Santa Maria, what is reformed by the
catholic kings in the 18th century with a rich Baroque interior.
South west you find the worth seeing the town hall, build between 1996
an d 1760 B.C. and recognisable on his two 35 m high square towers.
With the step of the town hall they measure the zero point above the sea
level, and on the basis of this point, all heights in Spain get
measured.
At the north west from the town hall you find the church “San Nicolás”,
called the Cathedral, en was build in the 17th century for the patron
saint of the city. In the small part of the city Santa Cruz, on the west
side of the castle mountain find the ceramic museum.
The ascent of the “Calle de la Concepción” (± ½ hour) to the castle
Santa Bárbara (209 m high) gives you an unforgettable view over the
city, and inland of Alicante. The castle mountain at the east end of the
“paseo de Gómiz” is accessible per elevator.
North west from the “Plaza de Calvo Sotelo” and reachable via the “Plaza
de los Luceros”, you find the impressive building of the “Deputación
Provincial” with a archaeological museum; finding a archaeological
collection of the God “Tanit", and a painting gallery and a coin
collection.
Beach in Alicante:
- The beach from Alicante, Playa de Postiguet near the centre, on
the foot of the castle mountain Santa Bárbara: 300 m long, 20 - 40 m
wide, with fine clean sand.
- 3 km to the north direction San Juan, you find the beach “la
Albufereta”, 200 m long, 20 - 30 m wide, with fine sand and good
facilities.
- 4 km north Alicante you find the beach from San Juan: 4 km long, 100 m
wide and a pure flat sand beach with good facilities.
- Following north, the beach “Muchavista”: 2 km long, 100 m wide,
pebbles with good facilities and pure deep water.
- “Playa los Arenales del Sol“, between the dunes with 1 km long beach,
100 m wide, good facilities, and strong waves.
