Cartagena is Spain’s most important naval base and a large commercial
port. Your first sight seeing visit should begin
with the harbour. Admiral Nelson described it as the safest harbour in
the Mediterranean area.
”La Muralla del Mar” (the wall of the sea), which was built by virtue of
the order of king Carlos III, surrounds the old part of the city. Near
the wall, on the main quay of the harbour there is the original
prototype of the world’s first submarine invented and launched by local
designer Isaac Peral in 1888.
After visiting the harbour head into the town to the
Town Hall (Ayuntamiento in Spanish ) which is well worth seeing, in
particular it’s beautiful marble steps.
Following “la Calle del Cañon” you arrive at the “la Cuesta de la
Baronesa”. From here you can see and visit the Cathedral, the oldest
church in the city. Nobody knows exactly when it was build, probably
around the year 1200.
Cartagena was very important Roman city. Besides the Merida the remains
of one of the most important Roman threatres (El Teatro Romano) were
found. The remains can be dated back to the first century B.C.
Archaeological works to expand the discovery are continuing up the
present day
A little bit further on you will find the “Calle Mayor”, the main street
of the city. There are typical tiled facades above the shops and
doorways with names like “Casa Cervantes” or “Llangostera” and the “Gran
Bar” or the “Casino” where people meet each other.
The García church of Santa Maria la Vieja in the “Calle del Aire” or the
Grand Hotel on the San Sebastian square, are worth visiting.
At “La Calle Moreria Baja” at the old entrance of the medieval city,
there are the archaeological remains of an roman pillar.
One must visit “El Parque Torres” where you admire “el Castillo de la
Concepcion”.
The city has several museums, including the “Muralla Bizantina” in “La
Calle de la Soledad” and there are other archaeological sites such as
the remains of the wall built and the Byzantines between the years 589
and 590 to surround and protect the city.
